A rare meeting of two of the most respected and influential men on their chosen instrument is the essence of Two Guitars. Burrell and Raney get to mix their different yet compatible sounds and styles in a setting that blends in the textures of Donald Byrd's trumpet and Jackie McLean's alto sax. As with many of the Prestige sessions from this period, Mal Waldron is represented by his writing as well as his piano playing. In addition, each guitarist has a track accompanied only by the rhythm section: Burrell on "I'll Close My Eyes," and Raney on "Out of Nowhere."
