Magnus Broo Quartet - Sudden Joy (1999) Mp3

Magnus Broo is an excellent Swedish trumpeter whose style sometimes recalls Freddie Hubbard (although he is not quite the virtuoso that Hubbard was) and Miles Davis. Teamed with pianist Torbjorn Gulz, bassist Mattias Welin, and drummer Jonas Holgersson, Broo performs four of his diverse originals and two by Gulz. The music is tied to the hard bop tradition, yet is often quite adventurous and unpredictable. Broo sometimes sounds quite fragile (particularly on ballads), but then will create a fiery flurry of notes that shows he actually has technique to spare. The music keeps one guessing, is consistently stimulating, and is well worth exploring.
