[The 2015 three-disc "Super Deluxe Edition" of A Love Supreme: The Complete Masters is packaged in oversize format. The original album is on disc one with two mono dubs of "Psalm" made for Coltrane's personal reference. Disc two contains the surviving music in nine previously unreleased tracks. There is one version of "Psalm" is almost exactly as released--sans the vocal overdubs on the released version. Two short cuts offer the last two minutes of "Acknowledgment" with different vocal overdubs. There are also two complete takes of "Acknowledgment" by a sextet with tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp and bassist Art Davis, plus two short takes -- a false start with studio chatter, and an alternate. There are two versions of "Resolution": one an alternate take, the other a breakdown. This is all evidence that Coltrane knew exactly what he wanted, but remained open to emergent possibilities. Disc three contains the only known recorded concert performance of the suite in Antibes on July 26, 1965. It was previously issued with the 2002 remastered edition. An extensive liner essay by Ashley Kahn is appended by additional annotation about the concert, an introduction by Carlos Santana, rare session photos, revised studio notes, and Coltrane's surviving musical sketches. Assembled, they offer a multifaceted portrait of A Love Supreme.] ~ Sam Samuelson Thom Jurek, Rovi
