This Sibelius edition is a glowing testiment to the Halle Orchestra at the height of its powers under the baton of the masterful Sir John Barbirolli. Now digitally remastered and re- released, it comprehensively covers Sibelius's seven symphonies as well as favourites such as Finlandia, Karelia Suite, Valse triste and Pohjola's Daughter. The power of the brass and precision playing of the woodwind are wondrous to behold and, although there are five lengthy CDs-worth of music to listen to, large portions - such as Finlandia and the second movement of the First Symphony - are incredibly moving, such is the beauty of the performance. There are moments when the intensity does evaporate, most notably in the rather dirge-like Fourth Symphony, but over all this is undoubtedly a classic which deserved the digital brush-up.

Thanks, artmuss. 3.7Gb seems awfully large for 5 CDs.

@dastardlee: The CDs are in wav, which was much larger than flac. That explains why. Thanks for the share!

@WC2 thanks for the explanation, but wavs shouldn't come to over 3.5, and that is if all the disks are completely full, which they rarely are, especially in older recordings.

For reference, most popular FLAC has 10 levels of compression (uncompressed and from 0 to 8).
5 is default.
Even 0 is not PCM.
Uncompressed is said data compression except music.
I think 8 is used most here because of the less space.
WAV is PCM, no compression so needs big space (max 700MB for CD).
FLAC, ALAC, APE and WavPac...are lossless compression so need load and time for decompression.
I feel a little difference of sound among WAV and FLAC 0, 1...8, ALAC, APE, WavPac.
If wrong here, sorry.
Thanks

Theoretically, no difference between flac and wav, since flac is lossless; flac prefered for bandwith reasons …
