Miles Davis' recordings from the years of 1951-1954 are often overlooked for a number of reasons. Davis had a somewhat erratic lifestyle at the time, and these recordings do not feature the first 'classic' quintet. Even though Davis did not record nearly as often as in later years, what was recorded is quite outstanding. There are several recording sessions documented on this album. The first features a sextet of Davis, trombonist J.J. Johnson, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, pianist Gil Coggins, bassist Oscar Pettiford, and drummer Kenny Clarke. The second session features Davis in a quartet with pianist Horace Silver, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Art Blakey.

This album features a session that was recorded in 1953, featuring a lineup of Davis on trumpet, J.J. Johnson on trombone, Jimmy Heath on saxophone, Art Blakey on drums, Percy Heath on bass, and Gil Coggins on piano.
