This is an extremely enjoyable disc of music for Recorder Consort as it might have been played at the Courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. It includes pieces by Henry himself and by William Byrd, but most of it is by non-English composers because, as is explained in the notes, much of the fine English music of the time is not feasible for a Recorder Consort. The composers are very fine, though, and include Isaac, Arcadelt, Lassus, both Ferraboscos and others. It makes a thoroughly enjoyable programme.
Mezzaluna are an excellent ensemble of very fine musicians. They play together beautifully on an amazing range of recorders - the picture of them in the booklet is remarkable. The sound is lovely and they do full justice to this music. My sole reservation is that I find the sound of the Consort gets just a little samey after a while, and it's best to play short sections of this disc to avoid the danger of it becoming background music. I find if I do that, every piece really shines.
The recorded sound is excellent, the booklet is attractive and the notes are very interesting (and very readable). It's a fine disc all round and warmly recommended.
