Maria Faust Group was formed in 2005 by Maria Faust, Estonian saxophonist and composer, during her studies at the music conservatory in Esbjerg. The group is currently based in Copenhagen and has become one of the strongest jazz acts on the Danish music scene. Maria Faust's music is multi-faceted and has elements of classical music as well as Estonian folk music, pop and rock. The music is also influenced by the concept of free improvisation and the composer likes to play with the idea of comparing and making contrasts between free improvised pieces and composed parts.
In 2008 Maria Faust Group released its debut album Bitchslap Boogie on the record label Barefoot Records. Bjarne Sltoft from Norwegian “Jazznyt" describes it like this: “At the age of 28 Faust here debuts as a fully mature bandleader, composer and alto saxophonist, leading an octet with talented Danish young guys.
Faust has integrated a multitude of musical impulses in her music, from reminiscences of young rock music, modern European compositional music, Eastern European folk song and not the least the free jazz. She is capable of writing captivating music with clear structures and complex arrangements for the four horns—sonorous, poetical and dynamic so that the late Charles Mingus is brought to mind, albeit in a contemporary idiom."
