VA - Rhino Instant Party - '70s Rockadelic (2001)

Another volume in Rhino's Instant Party series, 70s Rockadelic isn't really rock, nor does it have much psychedelia, and it's hardly a hybrid of the two. Instead, it's pretty much a standard collection of early-'70s hits. Yes, there are a couple of ringers here -- a delight when it's the Beach Boys' best single "Sail on Sailor" (though that's a matter of opinion), indifferent when it's Canned Heat's "Let's Work Together" -- but this is pretty much standard fare, anchored by "American Woman," "Spirit in the Sky," "I Saw the Light," "Ride Captain Ride," "Green-Eyed Lady," "Year of the Cat," and so on. Not a bad listen by any means, and anybody looking for all these songs on one disc won't be disappointed, but it's really meant for that audience alone. Anybody else will find this all a bit familiar.
