01. Three for the Festival
02. Day One
03. Isadora
The Alex Anest Trio is Jesse Kramer on Drums, Dave Sharp on Bass, and Alex Anest on Guitar. The group plays a fair amount of Monk, some original tunes, and music by great jazz composers such as Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The three tunes on this short EP were recorded at Backstreet Studios in the B Room on August 14, 2016.
Three for the Festival is a Rahsaan Roland Kirk tune that Dave brought to the group. It's a basic minor blues and it's a lot of fun to play.
Day One is one of Alex's older tunes. The fifteen bar form makes for some interesting phrasing, and the melody is both angular and singable. Dave takes the first solo on bass, followed by Alex on guitar.
Isadora is a recent composition of Alex's. It explores the dominant-tonic relationship in its many permutations. While the harmony is shifting and restless, the melody is simple and keeps the tune grounded. Jesse is featured on drums on the outro of the tune.
