Skull Snaps - Skull Snaps (1973;2018)

Mr Bongo reissue this obscure funk nugget from 1973, an album which achieved little commercially on its original release but has gone on to achieve near-legendary status after being plundered for samples by the likes of Eric B & Rakim, DJ Shadow and Digable Planets. It's more than just a sample goldmine, though: with cuts ranging from the blaxploitation strut of 'I'm Your Pimp' to the Ike Hayes-ish heartbreak ballad 'Didn't I Do It To You', via the northern soul stomp of 'My Hang Up Is You and the Meters-esque 'Trespassing', this deserves a place in any funk and soul lover's collection.
