In the late '90s, trombonist Michael Davis gained some recognition for playing with Chick Corea's Origin. This earlier set, however, is rather commercial and unimaginative. Although Davis has a few decent solos, even such songs as "The Look of Love," "Come Rain or Come Shine," and "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" (not to mention the originals) are saddled with light funk rhythms, dull arrangements, and routine playing. There are some fine players who make appearances (including Bill Evans and Kenny Garrett, both on sopranos), but Philippe Saisse's keyboards make everything sound lightweight. Michael Davis is certainly capable of better.
