I grew up listening to the original recording (Lagoya on guitar, Bolling on piano) on vinyl. That version, alas, has never made it to my favorite music streaming services - nor had any version for that matter. I was excited to see that the suite had been freshly recorded and was available for streaming.
Overall, the musicianship here is wonderful. The Claude Quartet plays with precision and feeling, and in lock step. Nuances (subtle dynamics, etc.) have been captured in fuller fidelity than in the original recording, making this an interesting listen. Of course, when you've heard one recording hundreds of time, the first time listening to a new one will seem a bit jarring at times, when the differences are at their greatest - but I'll not place any value on that - it's just different.
The only minor criticism I have is likely a by-product of the modern, crystal-clear, all-digital recording medium. Throughout the recording, and particularly when the guitar is being played solo, the studio mic picked up quite a bit of background noise (breathing, and probably the guitar moving around).
