Mike Spinrad With Guido Fazio - Horns (2018)

This jazz album was the most fun I've ever had in the recording studio. Guido Fazio's arrangements are first rate. But it was not without problems. On the tune Brooke I used the chords to the jazz standard, Cherokee, and wrote the melody on top of that. A half hour before the recording session, Guido called and said something was wrong with the chart. Don and I were mystified. Don had run through it on piano, and the chart seemed fine. It turned out that the third chord in the bridge section of Cherokee is a B major seven and I had written a B flat major seven. It didn't matter, because I wrote a workable melody over the B flat, but Guido was expecting Cherokee chords. Later the band congratulated me for my hipness, subbing the Bb for the B, but it was just a mistake. This recording is a branch on the "funky era" movement in jazz that flowered around the same time as the 60s Civil Rights movement. My sextet and I hope you enjoy it.
