The opening title begins with a dramatic string tremolo, which rises in intervals and opens in a melodic pendulum movement, supported by stuffed trumpet. After a short break in the drums, the strings start again, and in this warm sound bath Franco Ambrosetti lays the foul tone of his flugelhorn. "The Nearness Of You" is not the first record recorded by the Ticino trumpet player and flugelhorn player with a large, classical orchestra. But how he plays out his creative qualities here exclusively on the flugelhorn in the Solochorussen, how he orchestrates his infallible instinct for the melos with the orchestra, how he alternates between restrained nonchalance and biting Attack (Ambrosetti celebrates his 77th birthday in December) this makes "The Nearness Of You" an incomparable sound document. It does not matter that you feel reminded from time to time of the cooperation of Miles Davis with Gil Evans.
