Steve Turre is one of the most versatile and talented trombonists to emerge during the past 15 years. For his second Stash recording, Turre (who also plays his conch shells on two of the ten songs) utilizes a superb rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Billy Higgins) plus a jazz string quartet (Quartette Indigo) on six of the selections. The music ranges from standards (including "When Lights Are Low," Monk's "Well You Needn't" and "Mood Indigo") to some memorable originals and one complex piece played by the strings alone. Stimulating music with more than its share of variety.~Scott Yanow
