Drummer Barry Elmes is featured on this CD heading a top Canadian quintet that had just finished a long tour. The music is advanced straight-ahead jazz that includes four Elmes originals and such songs as "Grooveyard," Thelonious Monk's "Bye-Ya," and "Slow Boat to China." Elmes' band features tenor saxophonist Mike Murley, trumpeter Kevin Turcotte, guitarist Ed Bickert, and bassist Steve Wallace. Only Bickert is well-known in the U.S.; both Murley and Turcotte deserve much greater fame. Worth searching for.~Scott Yanow
