Although left out of the history books, drummer Gene Krupa's 1949 big band was very bop-oriented. This Drive Archive CD (which reissues the contents of an Alamac LP), features highlights from three live appearances from an engagement in Hollywood. At the time trumpeter Roy Eldridge was back with the drummer/leader and he can be heard reviving his routine on "Let Me Off Uptown" with singer Dolores Hawkins and taking a couple of heated solos (including on "After You've Gone"). Also quite prominent are trumpeter Don Fagerquist (a fine bop soloist), trombonist Frank Rosolino (who sings "Pennies from Heaven" and "Lemon Drop") and tenor-saxophonist Buddy Wise. The recording quality is a bit erratic but the music from this forgotten band is often quite exciting.~Scott Yanow
