Renee Rosnes - Without Words (1992)

For her third Blue Note CD, pianist Renee Rosnes' trio is joined by an orchestra (conducted and arranged by Robert Freedman) that covers a wide range of music in a very satisfying fashion. "You and the Night and the Music" almost sounds like a furious race between the trio and the strings. Rosnes' jaunty introduction to "Jitterbug Waltz" simulates bagpipes, while "Solar" shines brightly, showcasing bassist Buster Williams and drummer Billy Drummond. The bittersweet "Little B's Poem" blends bop with a waltz into a very swinging affair. Recommended.
