Master percussionist and drummer Babatunde Lea has summoned the spirit of rhythm in the company of some of the world's greatest jazz and world music luminaries. On Soul Pools, Lea leads a new team of all-star talent that includes John Benitez on bass, Kevin Jones on percussion, Ku-umba Frank Lacy on horns and vocals, Hilton Ruiz on piano and Mario Rivera on sax and flute. His stunning debut for Motema Music showcases his comprehensive drumming and percussion work which is exciting, stimulating and spiritual. A brilliant soloist, Lea is sensational on Kenny Garrett's "Jackie and The Beanstalk." He cuts loose with a solo that is filled with passion, depth and the musicality gleaned through years of travel, education and working with like-minded musicians. In addition to the great world music and instrumental jazz artists performing on this program, Babatunde Lea has invited vocalist Jana Herzen to interpret her original blues-laden composition titled "Round The World." Her sultry alto voice is given added dimension by the excellent accompanying solos from Raul Midon on guitar and Frank Lacy on trombone. Overall Babatunde Lea's uncompromising artistry is well-supported throughout this stellar endeavor. Best bets: "Soul Pools" for its intrinsic beauty, great horn charts and lyrical naturalness. This CD is a must for world music and jazz enthusiasts that enjoy the dynamic beats, rhythm and syncopation of drumming and percussion masters. -- Paula Edelstein
