Niko Valkeapää - Gáldu - Source (2019) [Hi-Res]

Niko Valkeapää is a Finnish-Saami singer/songwriter and vocalist. He has since 1990 been living in Kautokeino in the north of Norway. He is Godson of the late multitalented Nils Aslak Valkeapää. Niko has recorded new melodies to several of Nils Aslak's poems on his albums.He has also pointed out new directions and become a big influence and inspiration for a string of younger Saami artist.
Although Valkeapää is solidly anchored in the Sami tradition, his musical outings owe more to contemporary and mature electronica-infused pop than traditional Sami chanting does. “The songs on my album deal with themes such as urbanity, cultural diversity and introspective exploration. Inter-human relations, social reactions and themes that circle around these factors are also central topics in my lyrics,” says the songwriter.

Niko won the Saami Grand Prix in 1994 and 1995 and received "Spellemannsprisen", Norwegian Grammy in open class, in 2003 for his debutalbum ”Niko Valkeapää”. The year after the album ”Sierra” again made the critics turn their thumbs up. Niko won Liet Ynternasjonaal, song contest for European Minority Languages, in 2004 where he won Public Choice price as well. In summer 2008 was double album ”Birrat Birra” released and it got excellent critics. Album won Norwegian Folk Music Awards in to categories, Open Class and class for ”Most Innovative Folk Music”.
Valkeapää has done festivals and concerts in the rest of Scandinavia, Holland, USA, Canada, Alaska, Russia, Japan and Brazil.
