The middle volume of Bear Family’s five-album Dim Lights, Thick Smoke and Hillbilly Music series covers the year 1953, collecting 28 classic tracks from that wild year -- the year after Hank Williams’ monumental passing -- and showcasing the kinds of innovation that were occurring in hardcore woolly hillbilly music released regionally as well as nationally. Some of the set’s highlights include a posthumous release from Williams in "Take These Chains from My Heart," Jim Reeves' hit "Mexican Joe," Carl Smith’s rollicking "Hey Joe!," Joe and Rose Lee Maphis’ hardcore honky tonk "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud Loud Music)," Lefty Frizell’s beautiful reading of Jimmie Rodgers’ "California Blues (Blue Yodel #4)," Faron Young’s "Goin' Steady," and the Davis Sisters' gorgeous "I Forgot More Than You’ll Ever Know." That said, there isn’t a dud on the set and the annotation -- in typical Bear Family style -- is exhaustive, while the entire package is utterly attractive and fit for the collector’s shelf. This entire series is faultless and worth owning by any traditional country music fan.
