Mads a La Cour is the debut recording of Danish flugelhornist Mads a La Cour Langelund, a young veteran of the Danish Radio Big Band. La Cour is joined in the front line by saxophonist Philipp Gropper (who doubles on tenor and soprano sax), with a potent rhythm section including pianist Havard Wiik, bassist Andreas Lang, and drummer Kresten Osgood. The leader's "Lapa" has a bit of an ominous air, showcasing Gropper's edgy soprano, followed by La Cour's darting horn. The tense "Sleepy But Awake" opens with Wiik's rapid-fire wanderings all over the keyboard, with the horns added much later. Gropper contributed the loping "Santa Luzia" and Lang the mysterious "Gartenhaus" (on which Kasper Tom Christiansen takes over on drums), which opens with the composer's introspective bass solo. Full of adventurous jazz, Mads a La Cour will please fans of modern European Jazz.~Ken Dryden
