I originally purchased this album in the 80's and was amazed at the PJBE's total understanding of every style of music. When you get this album you will be amazed at Frank Lloyd's ability on horn and the support from the other players as well as the "fun" they have with him and the music. Originally composed for cornet and piano (Band) the ability to perform this on horn is stunning. The Koetsier Circus March is an absolute joy and one of the best, most interesting compositions ever written for Brass Quintet. The Joplin is (as always) performed as if the group were American! The PJBE has recorded many Scott Joplin rags and they have no equal in taste. The arrangement of the Grieg is well done and performed flawlessly...again...as the PJBE always does. The Londoner in New York City and the London Miniatures are both a bit dated, but still enjoyable.
The Rimsky perennial is performed by John Fletcher (Tuba)and scoots along with top-notch playing. Fletcher was the Tuba with the LSO and Previn once complimentd him on being able to perform anything and wanting to be the featured soloist.
To taste the PJBE's command of everthing musical, purchase the "In Switzerland" album. You will be very happy and very satisfied!
Many of these performers are no longer with us and this CD is a reminder of the glory days of brass playing.
