Lumpy Gravy is a special kind of Zappa album. Not only it shows his use of intense tape editing, splicing, and manipulations, it also shows his eclectic combination of humorously bizzare dialogue and orchestration, all tying together to several other albums released during this era and revisited years later. The continuity on this album is remarkable, yet overlooked and ingnored as nothing more than random noise, and nonsense. Like the first reviewer said, it doesn't grab you at first. But with repeated (as well as careful listening) of Lumpy Gravy, the continuity slowly begins to make sense. And that's the appeal of the album. Fragments of songs that in reality, tell a much bigger story than how it seems on inital listening.
It's one of Zappa's more challenging releases, showing his talents as a actual composer than simply being a experimental rock musician. Complacent-minded listeners will be thrown off and lost here. So buyer beware. This album is for those who can appreciate John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, or any musique concrete composer
