Two of Brazil's most exciting young performer-composers unite on a superb essay of the Brazilian sound. Conservatory trained pianist André Mehmari has written for Quinteto Villa-Lobos, the São Paulo State Symphony, and the São Paulo String Quartet, while setting trends in jazz and MPB. Latin Grammy nominee Hamilton de Holanda, master of the distinctive teardrop-shaped 10-string bandolim (Brazilian mandolin), has played with his brother, guitarist Fernando César, along with Cesaria Evora, João Bosco, Hermeto Pascoal, Richard Galliano, and Mike Marshall. From distinctive backgrounds, they nevertheless evince a common feeling for their Brazilian roots, from tender interpretations of Pixinguinha's "Rosa," Nelson Cavaquinho's "Notícia," and Paulinho da Viola's "Choro negro" to saucy reinventions of Guinga's "Di menor" and Egberto Gismonti's "Baião Malandro." A lovely revelation is their reworking of the Morricone theme from Cine Paradiso, plus two originals by each of the artists, and three bonus tracks from their initial 2004 encounter.~ Michael Stone
