One of Hilton Schilder’s primary contributions to the South African musical lexicon has been with The Genuines, which he co-founded Mac McKenzie in the 1980s. But his presence has also been felt in the goema, Kaapse klopse and Cape jazz scene with the likes of African Dream and Iconoclast (with Victor Ntoni and Vusi Khumalo).
Good news is that this edgy jazzman is now releasing a new album, titled Alter Native. He’ll present the new work at two gigs which also feature guest vocal appearances by Hilton’s daughter Duende and Mishka Reddy.
The launch gigs (and album) feature Mark Fransman on sax and flute, Eldred Schilder on double bass and Carlo Fabe on skins. Hilton features on piano, guitar, bows, melodica and vocals.
The album showcases his musical and cultural roots, combined with contemporary jazz influences. As to be expected the sounds of the Cape are ever-present on this new Cape Town album.
