1 Overture to a Picaresque Comedy 09:09
2 Nympholept 16:02

Symphony No. 4

4 II. Lento moderato 12:53
5 III. Allegro 10:26

Arnold Bax was the natural successor to Elgar; a responsibility that he did not welcome. In his early career he enjoyed considerable success with a group of symphonic poems, of which The Happy Forest is a fine example. Yet it was with his first two symphonies that his international reputation was achieved.

In gis Symphony No. 3, completed in 1929 the wide mood changes are perfectly integrated into the structure of the work. Evocative of the wild landscape of northern Scotland, the Symphony culminates in a magical and gravely beautiful epilogue.

'The two shorter works also receive powerful advocacy from Lloyd-Jones and the fine Scottish Orchestra. Worth trying by the inquisitive.' (Gramophone)

„David Lloyd-Jones’s on-going Bax symphonies cycle continued with a triumphant recording of the Fourth Symphony…together with Nympholept and the Overture to a Picaresque Comedy. This evocative Symphony reflects the natural grandeur of Scotland’s west coast and island.“ (Ian Lace, FanFare)
