He attended the Conservatory of Music in Granada, and subsequently studied at the University of Granada. He pursued conducting at the University of Alcalá, and his teachers included Harry Christophers and Christopher Hogwood. He was a founding member of the early music group Capella Exaudi, and helped form the avant-garde music ensemble SONÓORA. Heras-Casado has conducted the Spanish National Youth Orchestra and the Baroque Orchestra of Granada, and in 2007 he founded the period instruments ensemble, La Compañía Teatro del Principe, which performs Spanish operas of the Baroque era. Internationally, Heras-Casado conducted the Ensemble ACJW at Carnegie Hall, the Great Britain National Youth Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, the Paris National Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera.
