Jazz Marathon 4 is a live recording featuring some of the finest jazz musicians that the West Coast has to offer. All are well known international musicians, and have performed with some of the most famous artists in the world. By alternating between two separate ensembles, our producer Don Thomson creates a format of continuous music for these "jazz marathon" events held at Hangar 18 in Los Angeles, CA.
Captured on July 18th 2019, this concert represents a musical watershed that dates back to the birth of West Coast Jazz in the 1960's. The legacy of saxophonist/flautist/arranger Kim Richmond, and his musical relationship to Doug extends to the rest of these fine musicians and their collective histories. As parts of a collaborative musical movement that has developed over the course of a half-century, these various artists are now featured in a unique setting that invites innovation while paying tribute to the classic sounds of cool jazz.
'I first met Don Thomson in Hawaii in the mid 70's. Don has always been a patron of the arts and he wanted to produce a project with me that highlighted my various musical endeavors. We finally produced our first Jazz Marathon in 2014. In the subsequent years, we have released three other live albums featuring the pre-eminent jazz musicians living and working on the west coast. It's an honor for me to be able to release this "Jazz Marathon 4" which presents large-ensemble arrangements from legendary musician/arranger Kim Richmond as well as small-group selections that I chose in an effort to present a varied program. I hope that listeners enjoy the diversity of music contained within this album. Hopefully they'll feel the impact that I felt on the bandstand while I was performing as a part of these unique ensembles. This album has something for everyone and the effect will leave the audience with a sense of euphoria." - Doug MacDonald
