Howard Shelley once again proves his mastery of Hummel's music in this compilation of the rarer works by the Weimar composer, which include the Rondeau de Societe for piano and orchestra. Truly magical performances of each work transport the listener back to the time of Napoleon and the Bourbon Restoration, where one eye is firmly set on the past - Haydn and Mozart - and one is set on the future - John Field, Chopin.
Many people believe Hummel to be a composer of the transition from Classical to Romantic music, and there is a lot of truth in this, but the real genius behind his music is that he forged a new style in the aftermath of the upheavals of the French Revolution and the fall of the Holy Roman Empire which influenced so may composers after him - even so far as Saint-Saens, Rachmaninoff, Paderewsky to name but a few, while his Piano Concerto in B minor was the one chosen by Liszt for his concert debut.
For anyone who knows the concertos in A minor and B minor, the works on this CD will richly complement any collection of fine music.
