Vallejo CA native Ron Burris releases his debut self produced CD Mr Cool dedicated to his brother Hewitt Burris who was know by loved ones as Mr. Cool.
Ron's love of music began as a youngster in Vallejo CA listening to the music of "Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and all of the Motown stars like the Temptations, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles and Jr Walker and The All Stars plus James Brown and Maceo Parker"!
He actually began playing very early in the 4th grade and continued into high school when he joined a local band called Project Soul which later became Con-Funk-Shun!
Ron received additional inspiration from his family as his sister Barbara (Bobbie) sang in the church choir and his mother would sing hymns daily around the house as Ron elaborates "When I say hymns, I mean the slow meter hymns that were sung during the time of slavery".
Ron would go on to receive his B.A. in music and shortly after a teaching credential and taught in the school system for 10 years while still performing around the Bay Area. After hearing the music of Gene Ammons Ron fell in love with jazz.
Ron states "I admired Gene Ammons because he had such a beautiful sound on the horn, especially the low notes, and he made everyone listening feel the music he was playing. Lastly, Gene was a wonderful person"! Ron drew inspiration from other sax masters most notably John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Cannonball Adderley to name a few.
Additionally from the younger generation Wynton Marsalis,Vincent Herring, Eric Alexander and Kirk Whalum have also made an impression on Ron Burris!
Ron, following a "spiritual awakening" went back to school and received a master's degree in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1991 and a PhD in church history.
Later with the persuasion of his mother and Bay Area jazz legend John Turk, Ron returned to playing again and with passion!
This passion leads up to the genesis and recording of Mr Cool A recording of 7 originals and 2 standards.
The 9 tune set starts with Mode For Hank written for Ron's "departed good friend and organist Hank Upton". Mode For Hank "is a modal song" and swings madly from start to finish with strong fluid soprano playing by the leader!
Many of Ron's tunes are written from and inspired by relationship's and track 2 the bossa nova tinged Song For Tanya is no exception as Ron switches to tenor with passionate play. "written for my daughter" says Ron.
Staying with the tenor on the mid tempo groove of Ms Lillian B. along with the soulful tenor sound there are excellent solo's from pianist Wayne De La Cruz and guitarist Leo Cavanaugh! There is also a vocal version included with lyric's by Lillian Burris and a very original vocal performance by Laurice McCoy-Ozyuwah!
Alto Samba featuring the very quick fluid playing of the tenor saxophone A highlight here is the percussive interplay between Ron Carson on conga's and Evan Carr on drums!
The title track Mr. Cool finds a bluesy tenor out front. This one is bound to get lots of jazz radio airplay!
The first of the 2 none originals is the hard hitting, hard swinging, superb tenor playing on Mr. P.C! The light shines bright on the entire group on this classic gem! The tenor terror continues on Blues For Carla "a simple and happy blues written for my youngest daughter" concludes Ron.
The set concludes with the classic You Send Me a song Ron says "that I grew up hearing and trying to sing. It is a wonderful love song". Ron's alto and Wayne De La Cruz here on organ makes for a very soulful conclusion to a very passionate and emotional CD listening experience!
