Guy Johnston plays a cello made in 1714 by David Tecchler, a German-born luthier who was based in Rome. With the instrument into its fourth century, Johnston embarks on a wonderful journey that weaves in some glorious music along the way. New works by David Matthews, Mark Simpson, and Charlotte Bray sit alongside Beethoven’s “Ghost” Piano Trio, vibrantly played by Johnston’s violinist brother Magnus and pianist Tom Poster. Like Johnston, both are alumni of King’s College, Cambridge, whose choir sounds remarkable in these new contexts. Other treats are the two-cello sonata by Barrière with Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and Gjeilo’s heavenly “Serenity.”
