Carl Arter was a mainstay of the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania jazz scene for 50 years, first on saxophone and vibes and later on piano. Unlike his contemporaries Ahmad Jamal, Billy Eckstine, Mary Lou Williams, Ray Brown, Linton and Errol Garner and Edgar Willis, Carl never left town to become a jazz star. He carried on gigging and teaching harmony, as well as leading the musicians' local for years. Among his many students was sax player Stanley Turrentine. Carl recorded 3 albums, all for Earwig Music Company. One remains unreleased and another, You Don't Know What Love Is, spotlighted the dynamic vocals of diva Tiny Irvin. Carl died at age 86, January 11, 2006.
