In England wurde im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert der 22. November als Cäcilientag mit festlichen musikalischen Aufführungen zu Ehren der Schutzheiligen der Kirchenmusik begangen. Zu diesem Anlass steuerte auch Händel mit Alexander's Feast und der Ode for St. Cecilia's Day in den Jahren 1736 und 1739 zwei bedeutende Beiträge auf Texte des Dichters John Dryden bei. Händel nahm sich hier zwar Purcells Cäcilienoden zum Vorbild, doch näherte er sie durch den Einsatz von Rezitativen, Arien und groß angelegten Chören dem Oratorium an. Beide wurden von den Zeitgenossen schnell als überragende Werke des Komponisten erkannt. Bereits 1739 kombinierte Händel die beiden Stücke miteinander, wobei die Cäcilienode als dritter Teil von Alexander's Feast fungierte. Diese Kombination wurde denn auch in der Folgezeit häufig beibehalten, doch geriet diese sinnvolle Aufführungspraxis ab dem späten 19. Jahrhundert leider in Vergessenheit. CARUS führt diese Werke nun in einer herausragenden Aufnahme mit Simone Kermes, dem Kölner Kammerchor und dem Collegium Cartusianum unter Peter Neumann wieder zusammen.
