« Voici enfin rassemblés tous les enregistrements réalisés entre 1957 et 1962 à Vienne (Symphonies 1, 3, 6, 8), Londres (2, 4, 5, 7, 9) et Amsterdam (3) par le chef franco-américain pour Philips, Decca et Westminster. L'"Héroïque" se dédouble (1958 à Vienne, 1962 à Amsterdam) sans se modifier en profondeur : minutages et conceptions identiques, variétés des couleurs, des nuances, vitalité rythmique inépuisable, et deux orchestres magnifiés, l'opulence marmoréenne du Concertgebouw face à la douceur sensuelle des Viennois. Et puis ce bijou déjà connu : un fragment des répétitions de la 9e dans un anglais so frenchie (qui s'achève par un bref passage en revue de La Marseillaise !) Comme l'écrit Rob Cowan, Monteux n'est pas le beethovénien le plus "personnel" mais "le plus universel, le plus humain" sans doute. Et puis quelle verdeur, quelle allégresse juvénile dans le finale des 2e, 4e, 5e et 7e captées à Londres — Monteux avait largement dépassé les quatre-vingt-cinq ans.» (Diapason, janvier 2016 / Jean-Pierre Rousseau)

Pierre Monteux (1875-1964) recorded a complete stereo cycle of the 9 Beethoven Symphonies 1957-62, near the end of his life and career, well into his 80s. Symphonies 1,3,6 and 8 were with the Vienna Philharmonic; 2,4,5 and 7 with the London Symphony.

These performances feature a combination of Gallic elegance (Monteux) with the forthright, straightforward London Symphony. Playing is excellent throughout, but some minor tape vibrato noticeable especially in flute and clarinet exposed solo parts, tends to afflict Symphony 7. But one must make allowance for made over 55 years ago in this regard.

The stereo spread is very wide and I get the impression of a rich, full sound especially listening to Symphonies 4 and 5, my favorites in this set.

You can also buy this in the Eloquence 6 CD set of Monteux's Beethoven Symphonies which includes the VPO Symphonies 1,3,6,8; the LSO 9 (released on LP and CD by Westminster) a Concertgebouw/Philips 3; and Overtures to "King Stephen" and "Egmont".
