Hungarian native Kálmán Oláh has a diverse musical background, including formal classical training along with his Gypsy heritage and an intense interest in jazz. Joined by two accomplished veterans who need no introduction, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Jack DeJohnette (the latter of whom knows his way around the piano), the Grand Prize Winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Composers Competition displays his talent with five compelling originals, including the delightful off-kilter "Polymodal Blues" and the moody percussive "Hungarian Sketch No. 1." Oláh reveals an interest in the late Bill Evans by choosing three pieces associated with the legendary pianist. His take of Cole Porter's "All of You" is an extended workout, with great interaction among the trio members. Earl Zindars' "How My Heart Sings," another Evans favorite, is a fluid performance that is full of surprises. Oláh's treatment of the standard "Stella by Starlight" is powered by McClure's tasty bass and DeJohnette's crisp brushwork, with the leader delivering yet another engaging solo. -- Ken Dryden
