Joe Westerlund - Reveries in the Rift (2020)

Joe Westerlund is a drummer, composer, and improviser who works within a variety of musical outlets. Ongoing and intermittent affiliations include Mandolin Orange, Califone, William Tyler, Sylvan Esso, Megafaun, Bon Iver, Arnold Dreyblatt, Eugene Chadbourne and Gayngs, among a similarly diverse cast of artists. While studying with legendary percussionist Milford Graves, Joe began collaborating with choreographers, and has since composed music for modern dance and film. He has worked closely with dance faculty at UCLA and Bennington College; and regularly accompanies Prana Vinyasa yoga classes with his wife, Carson Efird at Sahaja S P A C E. In 2014, Joe released his first recording as a solo artist under the alias Grandma Sparrow, in collaboration with Spacebomb Productions. In 2016, after relocating from Los Angeles, he released Mojave Interlude on Northern Spy Records, a piece built largely from electronically manipulated percussion. Joe continues his work as a session/touring musician out of Durham, North Carolina.
