Performers:
Mstislav Rostropovich, cello

Rostropovich's interpretations of Bach's Cello Suites are magnificient and his playing is penetrating, tightly controlled, and skillfully executed. I know that some historical purists look down their noses at his soulful approach to these pieces, preferring instead Pierre Fournier's interpretation. Fournier's work is excellent for what one might have heard in the 18th century. But as one reviewer said when these Rostropovich discs first appeared, Rostropovich's work is "a revelation" of the sensitivity, the depth of feeling, Bach makes available. Rostropovich also "reveals" the thematic character of each suite; I've found that listening for that character in each suite has been rewarding.
