The Austrian Composer Alban Berg (1885 - 1935) is often considered the most "romantic" of the famous 12 tone/Second Viennese Triple Play that is Schoenberg, Berg & Webern. Schoenberg was more an old-fashioned Bach-like craftsman with a deep religious sense, and Webern was always polishing his little diamonds, as Stravinsky famously said. This doesn't mean that Berg is easy to listen to, or lush and romantic in the same way that Tchaikovsky is. No way! It just means that Berg stands out from Arnold and Anton, despite the musical "chaos", and is his own man. Unique and original, he is one of the greatest composers who ever lived. And this box set, from Deutsche Grammophon, is the perfect way to dive into that sea of musical "anarchy".
It contains pretty much everything Berg ever wrote (which is not really much). Juvenalia, I'm not so sure about. But you get the idea. This set includes the 3 Pieces for Orchestra, Violin Concerto, Chamber Concerto, Lyric Suite (in both string quartet and string orchestra versions), Piano Sonata, Opus 3 Quartet, tons of lieder, a few stray chamber pieces, a nice version of a Strauss waltz, and the two big operas: Wozzeck and Lulu. One complaint I've heard from a few reviewers on this set is that DG goes heavy on the same artists. Namely, Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Barenboim and such. I can see the gripe there, and maybe I wouldn't have put the Abbado Wozzeck in with the rest. But as I've said Berg didn't write that much music, so it's really only a minor quibble. You get the best Lulu recording ever made, (as well as the first complete recording), and the Lasalle Quartet plays the Lyric Suite better than I've ever heard it. And Anne-Sophie Mutter plays a magnificent version of the Violin Concerto, although it is unfortunately conducted by a person who no longer deserves to be named, for obvious reasons. The inclusion of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing the 4 songs, Op. 2 was a bit dubious though. I've never cared for his versions of 12 tone stuff. And I was surprised that Herbert von Karajan was not included here, since he is the reason DG exists in the first place! But overall, just quibbles.
This is the set to get if you do want to explore Berg's phenomenal sound world.
