Channel is a collection of solo saxophone improvisations from jazz musician Sunjae Lee, who has a long history of free improvisation starting from his upbringing in Boston, MA. This album was recorded at Ghetto Alive, one of the only venues in Seoul that supports improvised and experimental music in Seoul, and one that Sunjae has actively been supporting since its inception.
Recorded on tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones over the course of a week in December of 2019, the songs range from melodic lines to purely textural minimalism, with ample use of extended saxophone techniques. Solo saxophone has been a recurring theme in Sunjae Lee’s discography and live performances since his debut album in 2007 but this is the first album that is dedicated entirely to solo improvisations and also captures the essence of the venue where he performed regularly.
