The Steve Denny Trio returns to Dazzle for the release of their new album Life in New York, presenting an enticing mixture of expressive original compositions and creatively arranged standards. An autobiographical account of the trio’s tenure in the storied expanse of New York City, Life in New York reveals the trio’s clairvoyant interplay and swinging character surrounded by rhythmic drive, lush harmonies, intricate melodies, and soulful beats. Steve Denny is an active pianist and educator in New York City. He was one of five finalists for the prestigious 2012 and 2015 Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competitions. He holds a B.A. in Music from Loyola University Chicago, where he graduated summa cum laude, and an M.M. in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado. During his time at Loyola, Denny earned a Performance Award for his senior recital and received departmental honors as an Outstanding Music Major. While at UNC, he was a Graduate Assistant with the Jazz Studies Department and a member of UNC Jazz Lab Band I, one of the top collegiate big bands in the country. In 2008, UNC’s Lab I was awarded “Outstanding Achievement by a Collegiate Big Band” by DownBeat.
Denny has performed with jazz greats Slide Hampton, Stefon Harris, Paul McKee, Paul Warburton, Ken Walker, and Al Hood. He is also involved with many musical projects including his own trio, Keyboard Counterpoint with Neil Bridge, the Subterranean Jazz Quartet, and Trio Bravo. In addition to his active performance schedule, Denny is also an experienced educator, having taught at Front Range Community College and privately in New York City.
