Symphony No. 1 / Notre Dame
Franz Schmidt’s finely crafted Symphony No. 1, grandiose in scale and optimistic in mood, recalls the masterpieces of other great Romantic composers, Brahms, Bruckner and Reger, and won the Beethoven Prize in 1900. His opera Notre Dame, based on Victor Hugo’s novel, was first staged in Vienna in 1914, and won him an international reputation. Under Vassily Sinaisky the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, whose other Naxos recordings have been highly praised, makes a strong case for the revival of Schmidt’s strangely neglected, yet sumptuous and deeply satisfying music.

Symphony No. 2, Fuga Solemnis
Following their recording of Franz Schmidt’s Symphony No. 1 and excerpts from his opera Notre Dame (8.570828), the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and Vassily Sinaisky here present Schmidt’s astonishing Second Symphony. The composer transformed his original conception of the work as a piano sonata based on a single theme into a kaleidoscopic essay for a large orchestra, rich with wind, brass and percussion instruments. The Fuga Solemnis for organ, brass and percussion is an enduring testament to Schmidt’s originality, inventiveness and mastery of counterpoint.

Symphony No. 3 / Chaconne
Franz Schmidt’s Third Symphony was composed in 1927–28, dedicated to and premièred by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, winning a first prize from the Columbia Graphophone Company of New York for the best symphony in the spirit of Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony as part of the centenary commemorations of Schubert’s birth. Schmidt’s symphony is lyrical, includes a set of variations, a Ländler-like Scherzo and finale rich in thematic invention. In 1931 Schmidt added wind and percussion instruments and a large body of strings to his monumental Chaconne for organ, in which form it too was premièred by the Vienna Philharmonic.

Symphony No. 4 • Variations On A Hussar's Song
Naxos’s critically acclaimed series of Franz Schmidt’s lush late Romantic symphonies culminates with this new recording of his heartbreaking Symphony No. 4, conceived as a requiem for his daughter Emma. The Variations on a Hussar’s Song, while recalling similar works by Brahms and Reger nonetheless showcases Schmidt’s sensitive handling of large orchestral forces. Symphonies No. 1 (8.570828), No. 2 (8.570589) and No. 3 (8.572119) are also available in what BBC Music magazine has praised as a ‘consistently impressive cycle of Schmidt symphonies’.
