After hearing Lewis Nash playing on an Oscar Peterson record, there was no way back for Bart-Jan (born 1983). He took private lessons for only one year and managed to reach the level to get accepted at the Prince Claus Conservatory, the Netherlands, which gave him the opportunity to take private lessons with great teachers and musicians like Steve Altenberg, Ralph Peterson Jr. and Joost van Schaik.

Since then, Bart-Jan has developed his musicianship rapidly. He has performed at many festivals and venues throughout the country and he has also played numerous concerts with many jazz musicians in the Netherlands and abroad. In 2010, Bart-Jan graduated at the Prince Claus Conservatory.

That same year, Bart-Jan received a full scholarship from the prestigious Huygens Talent Program as well as a Fulbright Scholarship which enabled him to pursue a Master’s Degree in jazz drums, studying with drum teachers Gene Jackson and Vince Cherico at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York City. In June 2012, Bart-Jan graduated after which he moved to Amsterdam. This is where he formed his own group for which he writes original compositions. Bart-Jan's debut album is expected to be released in the spring of 2020.

Besides being a performing artist, Bart-Jan has also been a drum teacher since 2012. He has a drum studio in Amsterdam-West and accepts students of all ages and skill levels.
