Kazemachi Roman (風街ろまん Kazemachi Roman) translated literally as Wind City Romance, is the second album by Japanese folk rock band Happy End, released 1971.11.20 in Japan on URC Records. Japanese rock monument. A concept album that tries to make the original scenery of Tokyo, which was lost after the Tokyo Olympics, appear in a fictional city called "Kazemachi". Announced in November 1971.
Bannai Tarao (多羅尾伴内 Tarao Bannai), a fictional Japanese detective, who has appeared in many Japanese crime thrillers, is credited on several of the album's songs. In addition, the singer on Haikara Hakuch, even opens the song by saying, in English, "Hi, this is Bannai Tarao. Haikara (lit. "High-collar" or "Western fashion") is... Beautiful."
In 1992, Takarajima magazine rated Kazemachi Roman #6 in their all time Top 20 Japanese Rock Albums.
In September 2007, Rolling Stone Japan rated Kazemachi Roman #1 on their list of 100 Greatest Japanese Albums.
In response to the Rolling Stone list, Snoozer magazine rated 150 Albums and controversially ranked Kazemachi Roman at #32, stating "We have long grown tired of seeing charts that have (Happy End’s) Kazemachi Roman at the top".
