Initially announced January 24, 2020, the fan club gift from U2.com is a full length video release of U2’s final performance on the Experience and Innocence tour. The gift was made available both in a DVD format and as an online 4K stream via U2.Com for the length of a subscription. The DVD was already in production when the announcement was made, and had already been submitted for ratings.
The video is the full concert, running two hours and 20 minutes, and the description on the website says it covers “from the unforgettable opening burst of ‘The Blackout’ and ‘Lights of Home’.” The previously aired television special from this Berlin footage ran 75 minutes and cut out the first act of the concert. The fan club release contains the entire show.
The DVD is accompanied by a booklet of exclusive photos by tour photographer Ross Stewart and produced by the band’s long time graphic designer Shaughn McGrath, with creative direction by Gavin Friday. The DVD began arriving with subscribers on June 13, 2020.
A further announcement on March 1, 2020 confirmed that the video would also be available for streaming in a high definition format, “For those who can support it, streaming in stunning 4K UHD and 5.1 surround sound.” The streaming version was made available on March 14, 2020, with a special watch party being hosted by the moderators of the Zootopia forums. After the premiere, the video was available on demand, with the site stating “Once we’ve aired the premiere, ‘U2 eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE – LIVE IN BERLIN’ will be available on demand for the duration of your annual subscription.” The link to stream the video is available below in our catalog section if you are a subscriber for the 2020 year.
Although U2.Communication contained some video content on the CD-Rom as part of the gift, this is the first time that the band has issued a full length DVD as a fan club gift. No choice was given for a higher resolution disc, and the streaming 4K version of the film appears to be the fan club’s way to address this. A 75-minute high resolution 4K broadcast of the Berlin footage starting after the Intermission had previously been shown in 2019 on television. When asked about the possibility of a higher resolution disc release, the help section at U2.Com listed the following answer, “This film is released for U2.com subscribers and will not be available to buy on blu-ray.” Sources at Universal Music Group had originally suggested a commercial version may happen in the future, but we are told at this point that there will be no physical release of this video in 2020 other than via the fan club.
Due to the lateness announcing the new gift, subscriptions ending before the end of February 2020 were extended so that they now expire on February 29, 2020, to give the fan club additional time to announce this release.
Please note that although some subscribers have started to receive the disc, it usually takes about six months for all subscribers to receive their gifts once shipment has started. At this time it may take even longer, as the current virus affecting the world has resulted in slower than normal mail service between countries.
