“It was just one of those things, one of those fabulous flings...”
Just like those iconic Cole Porter lyrics manage to perfectly describe the new, exciting and overwhelming emotions that accompany a fresh romance, they also capture the bright, carefree, intense enthusiasm that multi-format chart topping artists The Black Market Trust distill and bottle on their third Pop-inspired Jazz release, Just One Of Those Things.
“We were all aware that we hit a new gear while we were recording this album.” said lead vocalist/guitarist Jeffrey Scott Radaich. “It was fun and effortless. Everyone was throwing in ideas at a pretty rapid pace and I think you can hear the energy and joy in the vocals and instrumental performances on each track. I think it’s a very optimistic and romantic record.”
The Black Market Trust spent the majority 2016 on tour in support of their previous album II, which produced the Top Ten single "Route 66," and the countless hours interacting with each other and audiences across the country helped sharpen their live act and elevate their on-stage band dynamic to exhilarating new heights. “This new record really highlights the time the band has spent touring this past year” says bassist Brian Netzley. “I think you hear a more confident, more skilled and more focused band. You also hear a looser band who sounds like they’re having the time of their lives playing and singing this music”.
The newfound confidence and focus is immediately noticed as the 13 song playlist opens with a hopeful and hot version of the Loewe/Lerner classic “Almost Like Being in Love.” “I think the celebratory and upbeat song list we chose for this album really inspired me to pop the clutch a bit,” says drummer Brandon Laws. “That and the combination of this band having a stronger vision- knowing what it is that we do- really inspired me to carefully craft my parts and help make this our best record yet.”
Violinist Nick Coventry adds, "We've spent the last year working so hard- touring, building a buzz about the band... we even wrote an original song for the new record- and now we just can't wait for people to hear all of it! We know these timeless songs mean as much to a lot of people as they do to us and we really look forward to sharing that with audiences."
For the recording of Just One Of Those Things, The Black Market Trust decided once again to use famed engineer Eric Uglum and his New Wine Studios. “Eric’s skill at capturing the sound of acoustic instruments is pretty much unequaled,” says Chris Irwin, rhythm guitarist/vocalist. “His musicality and engineering expertise helps bring that swinging, punchy sound out of our guitars that really is such a meaningful ingredient to our band.”
The Black Market Trust’s Just One Of Those Things might be "one of those fabulous flings" but from the sound of it, we are all in store for a long, happy committed relationship with this band.
