Claudio Roditi - Three For One (2003)

Trumpeter Claudio Roditi is well showcased on this CD in an intimate setting with pianist Klaus Ignatzek and bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse. Actually, all three musicians often act as equals during a date reminiscent of some of Chet Baker's Steeplechase recordings; Rassinfosse frequently played bass with Baker during the trumpeter's European years. The musicians perform five Ignatzek songs, four by Roditi, and "On Green Dolphin Street." Roditi takes a forgettable vocal on "Sem Falar," but his trumpet playing is heard at its prime throughout and some of the originals (particularly "Avocado," "Waltz for Walter," "Either Way," and "Sussex Garden") are catchy and infectious. Three for One is a very likable set that is lightly swinging, melodic, and fun. -- Scott Yanow
