AKOBEN, the Adinkra symbol for “war horn,” inspired this debut offering from DC-native, Harold Little. Fusing jazz, funk, rhythm and blues, as well as old school hip-hop, the trumpeter channels the ancient Asante people to create a sound that reinvigorates the ever-popular go-go genre. Whether celebrating his roots on East of the River or issuing a rallying cry in the wake of the still unsolved murder of Sandra Bland on the title tune, Little engages and surrounds the listener with a collection of tunes that dance, swing and soar.

On this recording, the flugelhorn and trumpet are more than instruments. They are an extension of Little. With the chops and technique on display here, it’s no surprise that he’s played with jazz and go-go legends like Chuck Brown, Butch Warren, Buck Hill, Eddie Gladden and Calvin Jones.

The accomplished musicians joining Little on AKOBEN also deliver. Combined, they bring funk-style jamming and percussion (Stomp the Roaches, Stanky Weed), rhythm and blues (I Thought You Knew, Step--For Mom & Dad), and jazz standards (Take Five, plus two searing covers of You Don’t Know What Love Is) that feed the soul and transport. Conjuring memories, people, places as well as delights far beyond day-to-day cares.

AKOBEN transcends classification with new harmonies and orchestration that defy description. Swing rhythm underscored prominently by the bass drum and other percussion instruments (timbales, conga drums, hand-held cowbells, snare drum, and the hi-hat). Vocal artistry evoking gentleness, wisdom and longing. The wit and candor of the war horn weaving mystery and communicating--sometimes--with the force, depth and suddenness of a blow. And, at other times, a kiss.

AKOBEN is the initial love offering to Little’s fans, musical heritage and life journey. The project makes recorded time stand still. So, you can too.
