Bobby Matos - Acknowledgement (2005)

Percussionist Bobby Matos features plenty of variety on Acknowledgement. His group, which often showcases the passionate tenor playing of Frank Fontaine, performs ten of Matos' originals and three pieces by John Coltrane. Vocalists dominate three selections, but otherwise the emphasis is on the instrumentalists, which include the versatile Danny Weinstein on trombone and violin, pianist Theo Saunders, and three percussionists, including Matos. The well-balanced program includes some strong melodies, heated solos, and plenty of rhythm, all of it played with infectious spirit. Recommended.~Scott Yanow
