Dameronia, a group organized by drummer Phily Joe Jones to perform the great bop-era arrangements of Tadd Dameron, came back together four years after Jones's death for a concert in France. Fortunately, it was recorded and released on this Soul Note CD, for since that time, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan and pianist Walter Davis, Jr., have also passed away. In addition to those two masters, the 1989 version of Dameronia included trumpeters Don Sickler (whose transcriptions made this group possible) and Virgil Jones, trombonist Benny Powell, Frank Wess on alto and flute, baritonist Cecil Payne, bassist Larry Ridley and drummer Kenny Washington. The ensembles are very much in Dameron's classic style, but all of the musicians also have plenty of solo space. Tadd Dameron's legacy was very well served by Dameronia, and this set is a fine tribute.~Scott Yanow
